The ZOWIE Gamestah Overwatch League is a weekly League open to all Oceanic Overwatch teams. Match nights take place on Mondays and Thursdays, with Open Qualifiers played on Mondays, and Play-offs on Thursdays.
Through the duration of the League, teams earn League points by participating in the weekly tournaments. After 5 weeks, the eight teams at the top of the ZOWIE Leaderboard are invited to the League Finals series, where one team is crowned ZOWIE Gamestah Overwatch League Champions.
The League runs for a period of six weeks, starting 27 June 2016.
- Open Qualifiers are held each Monday night
- Play-offs are held each Thursday night.
- The League Finals are played on Saturday or Sunday (depending on feedback from teams) afternoon in Week 6 (6 August 2016).
The Open Qualifiers are held each Monday night starting at 7:30pm AEST. Entries are limited to a maximum of 32 teams who will compete in a Swiss Format bracket over six rounds of bo1 matches.
Teams earn points through each round as follows:
Teams earn one point for completing their attack. If both teams complete their attack, the team that completed their attack fastest earns a bonus point and wins the map.
Teams earn one point for successfully defending. If both teams successfully defend there is no bonus point and the round is drawn.
Teams earn points equivalent to the number of rounds they win in the KOTH bo3.
Qualification for Play-offs
At the end of six rounds, the four teams with the most points qualify to play in the Play-offs for that week.
The Open Qualifiers will not use map drafting to select maps. Instead, Gamestah will require specific maps to be played during each round, as follows:
- Round 1: Dorado
- Round 2: Lijiang Tower
- Round 3: Route 66
- Round 4: King’s Row
- Round 5: Watchpoint: Gibraltar
- Round 6: Ilios
Gamestah may swap maps from week to week based on feedback from the player community.
Each Thursday, starting at 7:30pm AEST, the top eight teams in the League will face off against each other in a single elimination bracket of best-of-three (bo3) matches.
Pre-qualified Top Four
Teams which make the Semi-Finals of Play-offs each week pre-qualify for play-offs in the next week. For Week 1, the top four teams in the Overwatch Oceanic Power Rankings will pre-qualify and will be invited to play in the first play-off round.
The remaining four teams will be drawn from teams which completed Monday Open Qualifiers with the four highest positions progressing to the Play-offs each week.
Teams that lose their quarter final matches in the Play-offs will be relegated and must re-qualify through the Open Qualifiers the following Monday. These teams will be seeded one through four in the Swiss format bracket.
Maps will be determined through a standard drafting process using OWdraft.com.
The Assault maps (Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, Volskaya Industries) are banned.
League points are awarded using the same scoring system as the playoffs.
In addition to this, the four teams that pre-qualified will be awarded an additional 12 league points (i.e. the maximum points available to be earned by teams playing in the Open Qualifiers).
At the end of five weeks, the eight teams with the most League Points will be invited to participate in the League Finals. The League Finals will be played on Saturday, 6 August 2016.
The League Finals will be played as a single elimination tournament as follows:
- Quarter Finals: Best-of-Three (bo3)
- Semi-finals: Best-of-Three (bo3)
- Grand Final: Best-of-Five (bo5)
