A Dissection Of Depravity
The war is beginning and the peasants are still revolting.

Futility: "uselessness as a consequence of having no practical result". That pretty much sums up the "Console War". The war originally started back in the 8-bit days where Amstrad, Commodore and Sinclair battled it out quite furiously. Today however we have entered a new phase in the war, namely the "Next-Gen" phase. In this phase we have three different sides with three different "weapons of market dominance" (WMD): Nintendo with the Wii, Microsoft with the Xbox 360 and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) with the PlayStation 3 (PS3). Behind each side is an enormous army of sightless, narrow minded zealots known as fan boys/girls. Currently the war is cold with only one of the WMD's having been released; namely the Xbox 360. However, it is set to heat up with the Wii and PS3 being released in the fourth quarter of this year (2006). The war has pretty much split the internet in three and there have been flame wars of simply epic proportions. Due to the fan boys/girls it’s almost impossible to carry out a discussion where you speculate over the contenders of the console war without it sinking to the level of childish insults. So it is here where I intend to examine the nature of fan boys/girls. To do this I am bringing to the table my best tools: logic and common sense. Before I begin however I must warn you that we are about to enter the minds of the clinically insane. If you are religious, squeamish, impatient or never really one for book learnin' then I suggest that you close your browser window immediately.

The best place to start dissecting this particular dilemma is to build up a general picture of the entity at hand. Most fan boys/girls are in their early teens but there are a few who are older. The oldest specimen you would find would be one in their early thirties. The gender split is somewhere around 90-10 out of 100 men to women respectively (The actual values are probably much lower). Their reasons for choosing to support a particular console usually vary. In some cases it is because they were brought up with console(s) from the same company. In other cases it’s because of peer pressure as in they chose a particular console because all the cool people had one. Despite the differences in origin all fan boys/girls exhibit an equal level of fervency. I have come to believe that age has a lot to do with the attitudes of fan boys/girls. Because a large majority of them are quite young their ability to assemble a cohesive logical argument is hindered. To this end they almost always end up repeating the opinions of others. Most arguments are therefore repetitive in nature and once you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all. But what are these arguments?
