World Cyber Games 2008 New Zealand Qualifiers The lighting and sound effects on the main stage kicked off at 9am in the form of Call of Duty. An exhibition match thanks to xLAN, 28th MB|Team X going up against Team Rainbow from sila. In what turned out to be a completely one-sided affair, 28th MB marched into the next round winning 16-0 on crossfire. Following the Call of Duty match, the Gamestah team turned their attention to CounterStrike:Source. It came in the form of x5gaming going up against NewType. The map was de_train and it turned out to be a lot closer that the COD4 match. NewType came through towards the end and secured the victory 16-11 and move them into the fourth round against select5. The main stage remained in CounterStrike mode for the third match of day two. The scoreline turned out to be exactly the same, 16-11 on de_nuke went in favour of Divine Gaming when they took out Solja. The gaming rigs and were pushed to the back to make way for the PC World Magzine Case and Console Modding Competition. There were seven entrants including one which couldn't make it on to the stage - it was car rigged up with a laptop and a pop-up 7-inch touchscreen built into the dash. It wasn't long before the cases and consoles made way for the return of the main matches. This time it wasn't PCs or even the WCG tournament. A celebrity match between The Edge radio station and New Zealand band Nesian Mystik in the form of Halo 3. They played 3 maps and whilst The Edge won the first two - the third map turned into a rocket only battle and it was here that Nesian Mystik showed what they were made of with a win. The real Halo 3 action replaced the celebrity match on the main stage and it was Domination up against Cos were awesum. 2 maps lasted their regulation 15 minutes each and it was Domination who took the win staying alive in the double-elimination tournament. Team Fortress lead by the Sleep Fan Club made its way into the audience and on the stage was the highly regarded Team Sidewinder who defeated 2pm. CounterStrike 1.6 was loaded on the gaming rigs provided by PlayTech and the audienced packed in to see eTu going up against Heretik. In what was a consistent theme all day on the main stage, the result was again 16-11 on de_inferno. It would be eTu who would make their way through into the losers bracket Semi-Final. After watching the teams go at it for most of the day, the evening bought some one-on-one action to the main stage. PC based FIFA08 got underway after a lot of setup and warmup by the players. The early goal hit the back of the net after a cross and header giving Pablo the win against Fobski. At present the 'Act and Dress like a Rock Star' competition for Guitar Hero 3 is currently on the stage. You would have never thought gamers could stoop this low.
