Reloaded Lan 2008...... for 30 hours the Gamestah team of Glimmer, MomoWang and Sacrifice manned the mobile studio and broadcast the competitive gaming from Australia's largest Lan event. With over $70,000 worth of cash and prizes on offer, the competition was fierce. There were a wide variety of tournaments for both PC and XBox 360 however the big focus was on Battlefield 2, Call of Duty 4, CounterStrike 1.6 and CounterStrike Source.

Near freezing temperatures, minimal sleep nor promo girls wanting some attention could sway the team from their broadcast activities. Over twenty matches from the four games were covered during the two day event in Woodville near Adelaide. The LAN was exceptionally well run  and whilst the bugs that haunt every LAN were on the job again, the admin team under the leadership of Wookie served up the goods each and every time to get things back under control.

The winners at the end of the event were Sydney Underground for CounterStrike Source, Alternate for CounterStrike 1.6, AusStrokers for Battlefield 2 and Zero Remorse for Call of Duty 4. The Gamestah team congratulates these teams on their success as well as everyone who participating in making these competitions so successful.

Battlefield 2

This was the first tournament to get underway at Reloaded LAN. The promise of numerous teams dimished into a line-up of 3, the Noobs, the Aussie Universal Soldiers and the AusStrokers. The Aussie Universal Soldiers were the only clan based team attending. Their history in the Battlefield community is extensive and they always play hard but fair. Their performance and sportsmanship at Reloaded LAN certainly reinforced their quality reputation. The Noobs on the other hand were the opposite. A bunch of randoms who pulled together to play Battlefield in a competitive format, many for the very first time. They really took it to their more highly fancied opposition and caused some heart stopping moments. They were certainly assassinated with their pants down on the scoreboard, but the went down fighting and earned the respect of the entire Gamestah team for their efforts.

So this leaves the other team. The AusStrokers. Where do we start of this mob. In their own words, this team was not a championship team but a team of champions. Under the leadership of the well respected Saddam, the team comprised a raft of well known, and possibly less respected, members of the Australian Battlefield community. Big names including Dawson, Budzilla and the ever popular Westy were welcome guests in the Gamestah Studio.

The format of the event was 8v8 BF2 Pro Ladder Mod round-robin with each team playing each other. The outcome of this, albeit predictable, saw the AusStrokes taking on the Aussie Universal Soldiers. Whilst the battle was intense with nades flying in all directions, the AusStrokers sent the Aussie Universal Soldiers packing with a complimentary "I love Saddam" mouse pad and a jar of KY Jelly. The final score 183-0 to the AusStrokers.

The team walked away with some brand new PC cases for their efforts. Some of the highlights centered around Westy (no surprise there). The Gamestah team threw him into the guest speakers chair and introduced him to e-sports broadcasting as he provided some very special comments throughout the event. His favourite moment however wasn't this, nor winning his new case: it was being inappropriately touched by Momo whilst his girlfriend wasn't looking. Westy.... your man boobs fail !!

Call of Duty 4

Well this was the big one for Momo and Sacrifice. COD4 is their primary game for e-sports broadcasting and the scheduled start time of 1.00am had them pumped to the max. Sacrifice was drafted into help run the tournament and assist ZR:Sunjo who himself was voluntarily nominated as the Tournament Admin approximately 8 minutes prior to it starting. A number of teams participated in the highly-talked-about event. The format followed the popular competitive ruleset established at CyberGamer.com.au by Asterix.

The Gamestah team casted teams like TBA and AUZ in the early rounds before the finals started and some strong teams came to the fore. Zero Remorse were able to tank TBA to move into the Semi-Final which they comfortably won. In the other Semi-Final, it was Defiance going up against the high-regarded Frag Addix. Defiance was causing a stir with their unexpected success. This team comprises mainly of those from the successful AusStrokers and their Captain Westy certainly played well enough to deserve attention. It was however, the Frag Addix who won the day and marched into the Grand Final against the arch enemy, Zero Remorse.

The Grand Final line-up was predicted in advance by the CyberGamer.com.au COD4 community. The poll was run days prior to the event and of the 203 votes cast, ZR were tipped as favourites with a whopping 68% of the vote leading the Frag Addix next best on 14%. The best of three map Grand Final got underway on Backlot. The first map went  in favour of ZR with a score line of 13-7 and it was quickly followed by a 13-6 win on Crash. The Frag Addix fought very hard all the way but the Zero Remorse team, lead by the brilliance of Choda, was simply too strong on the day.

Counter Strike 1.6

Sunday morning, 9am. Stomach = empty, Sleep < 2 hours, enthusiam approaching zero, evening highlight - Glimmer and Momo sharing a beanbag (note to Ej, camera required for the mobile studio in future). Glimmer is the pro when it comes to CounterStrike with his years of covering the game including major international events such as ESWC and WCG. Momo and Sacrifice were more like wtf is this crap - its like CS source gone emo. Suffice to say, Momo's experience with CS:S enabled him to quickly figure it all out and provide some support to Glimmer. It was an exciting tournament and it started in the early rounds with coverage of M8S and Xtreme Gaming. The XG had their fan club in IRC spamming it up and getting shoutouts every five minutes - mainly lead by Gamestah Fan Club leader Brando supported by Steve. OnePointSecs played Equal Last and then it was Vamped and Alternate.

Vamped won that match and subsequently went into the Grand Final undefeated and as favourite. Alternate were able to return to form and win through to play them yet again. The double-elimination format meant that Alternate would have to come back against the odds and beat Vamped not once, but twice in order to take the 1st price. And this is exactly what they did. The firely team took it straight to Vamped and didn't let up. They certainly played well and deserved their victory on the day.

Counter Strike Source

Counter Strike Source. The biggest draw card for Reloaded LAN 08 with over $5000 in cash up for grabs. The focus was certainly on first spot with the $3000 prize money giving each of the players a $600 pay cheque for their weekends effort. Such a major event that it was drew in two of the biggest teams in Australian competitive gaming. Sequential Gaming and Sydney Underground were both present sporting their team uniforms plugging their numerous sponsors. This however was only two teams, there were another 19 participating in the biggest tournament of the LAN.

Four groups of teams were setup with the top seeds Sequential Gaming, Sydney Underground, Klaus and Xtreme Gaming each being joined by the remaining teams. The round robin qualifiers were played out on the Saturday night with the top two teams from each group making their way through to the finals on the Sunday afternoon.

The finals started out well with some great competition and awesome matches, including one absolute thriller which went into triple overtime before a winner could be found. It only took until the third round before the top two teams faced-off. Sequential Gaming and Sydney Underground went head-to-head in what was expected to be a preview of the final. The dominant force of the Sydney Underground on Dust2 where as CT they controlled the first half and then took it home to win 16-6. It was a positive victory for the team in their first real test of the weekend as the dulcet tones of nice were heard throughout the entire venue, casually interupted by Boomser doing his Leyton Hewitt Come-On impersonation after each round win.

Forced down into the losers bracket, Sequential Gaming now faced some still opposition on their road to the Grand Final and a Sydney Underground rematch. Their first opposition was Klaus who were able to hold out against 0087 who they'd lost to during the qualifying rounds the night before. Klaus pushed Sequential Gaming to the limit in this one the audience watching the broadcast on the big screen were starting to talk of an upset. It wasn't long however before the AWP shots of Havoc and the awesome skill of pupajon turned the tide and enabled Sequential to turn-up the heat on Klaus and take the match.

So now it was on again. Sydney Underground pumped with confidence from their earlier win staring down the Sequential Gaming boys who were out for revenge. The double-elimintion format meant Sequential would have to do it twice so the odds were against them. Train was the map for the final and it was Sydney Underground starting off as the terrorists. It didn't take long before Boomser was again competing against the amplified power of Gamestah as we could easily hear him from the other side of the hall. If he screamed Huk any more often we were sure he was going drag him out into the alley for a quickie. Thankfully Souljah separated Boomser from Huk who was able to continue leading the Sydney Underground to a winning position at the end of the first half, up on the scoreboard 9-6.

The second half is where Sequential Gaming needed to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Dblstr and deathdog took the fight to the opposition delivering some great kills whilst under the cover of Havoc with the AWP. The scores went round for round however the Sydney Underground got the edge with some great defence from Tegs and togGun and were able to move away and take it 7-4 winning 16-10 overall. Boomser nearly burst topguN ear drums as they celebrated their victory mere seconds after the win. Congratulations to the Sydney Underground for their dominating performance all weekend and well done to Sequential Gaming for pushing them all the way.

gg all round

Gamestah would like to acknowledge the efforts of Wookie and the entire admin team for running a very professional and well organised effort. Unique circumstances presented themselves as always and the team were also efficient in resolving matters and helping teams out. Thanks to the sponsors who without this event would not have been possible. Finally, to all the gamers who participated in the various tournaments for both PC and XBox 360.

Gamestah looks for to doing it all again next year at Reloaded LAN '09.
