Since EA brought out the 'add-on' feature which was basically a few little modifications, maybe a map or two, and some bug adjustments. Everyone company and his dog is now charging the gamer for new content. Its bloody outrages!

I can remember when Battlefield 2 first brought it out, everyone was worried that it would catch on to other titles and other platforms, although because you couldn't have the same advantage of those who had made the purchase, you needed to upgrade simply because it was unfair. Being multiplayer, unfair games mean bad games.

Computer games are now the norm for charging people for content after you've already shelled out $100 or so dollars, Xbox 360 is also doing it with their 'MarketPlace' where you have to buy 'Points' to get new maps, Tom Clancy's new title will cost you 1200 points, or $15US to upgrade. How can one who spends $119.99RRP on the game, $100 for Xbox live gold 12month membership, be expected to shell out futher money to buy upgrades, bug fixes, new maps and minor altercations that should have come out with the game on release?

I find it mind boggling that gamers are allowing this to happen. Sure, some people will say 'but it keeps the developer working on the game if they are still getting paid for updates, bug fixes and tweaks etc.' Publishers and developers should be supporting games for errors atleast 6 months after release regardless. They cannot beta test every single thing in the game for bugs.

My main example of how frustrated I am with this is battlefield 2, when it came out it was buggy, some maps unplayable and unfair, weapons over powered again'st their MEC counterparts etc. The first release 'Special Forces' rectified this by giving american's a weapon to counter the MEC, although at a fairly hefty price. The only new content was one weapon, two maps and a zipline. Value for money eh?

Since I bought my 360 i've come to realise the length of the points system, you cannot buy anything to do with the gaming content without points, which you need to buy either using a credit card online, or through selective stores. The majority of them start from 150points and up, its not cheap.

I guess companies will continue to do and we'll happily keep purchasing crap for $20 each time.

Unfortuantly this is going to keep happening more and more. EA bought it to everyones attention, and it was only a matter of time before other companies cought onto the idea.
I agree that companies should support their products for, I think, at least year. Most things you buy these days have a 12 month warranty. I know games are different, but 12 months of free patches and support should be what comes with every game.
If they are going to continue making us pay for upgrades and new content, then they should lower the original purchase price, so that it makes it more viable for the consumer

I agree, purchase price should be lowered to factor in the cost we may be spending an extra $100 on top of the game in order to get it workign properly.

TBH I believe this will only end up encouraging companies to purposely release buggy/unfinished games knowing full well that they can charge people for the fixes. Thats the road we are going down.

Yeah that is the problem EsKy, and with WoW working on a subscription based system, we could see more games heading towards subscription or pay for expansions/updates.

if game companies decide to follow EA's example in regards to paying to fix the game/include new content, do you think it will drive more people to try the free mods for these games?

Unfortunatly people shy away from playing mods due to the fact limited resources and limited experience generally mean bugs and other bad experiences in-game.

Get some free mods without the usual problems and i'm sure people would flock to it.
